Access to a reliable computer and the skills to use it can make a real difference in people’s everyday lives. Falmouth Community Television’s (FCTV) Digital Equity program is working to make technology more accessible to veterans and other community members through computer distribution, hands-on training, and ongoing technical support.

One recent recipient, James McHardie, is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who had been struggling with a decades old laptop. Its operating system was no longer supported, his internet connection kept dropping, and the computer had become increasingly slow and difficult to use.
He was referred to FCTV by Falmouth’s Local Director of Veterans Services. James was able to receive a new laptop through the FCTV Digital Equity program. FCTV staff also transferred the contents of his old computer to his new one, ensuring he could continue accessing his files and information.
“I was totally unprepared for this,” James said. “Not only did I get a brand-new computer, but everything from my old computer was transferred to my new one.” He also appreciated knowing that technical support would be available after the visit.
James’s experience reflects the program’s approach to digital inclusion. Providing a computer is an important first step, but helping people get comfortable with their devices and ensuring they have someone to turn to when problems arise are just as important.
Over the past five months, FCTV’s Digital Equity program has served more than 85 individuals and conducted over 150 training sessions. Digital Navigator Julie Ann Murray provides hands-on assistance to community members, with drop-in technology help available at multiple locations throughout Falmouth five days a week.
Partnerships have been an important part of this work from the beginning. FCTV has worked closely with the Falmouth Community Veterans Center since the program launched. The center offers classes and technical support for veterans, complementing FCTV’s efforts to connect people with the technology, training, and resources they need. Referrals from the Local Director of Veterans Services also help connect veterans with assistance.
The program is overseen by Allen Russell, FCTV’s Production and Education Manager and a U.S. Army veteran.
Through these partnerships and hands-on support, FCTV’s Digital Equity program is helping veterans and other residents overcome technology barriers, stay connected, and build confidence in an increasingly digital world.
