The Gallery at FCTV Presents “Beverley Edwards: Celebration of Life and Art Retrospective”

June 20, 2023 by Marcia

Beverley Edwards: Celebration of Life and Art Retrospective
July 2 – August 25, 2023

Artworks by Beverley Edwards will be on display at The Gallery at FCTV from July 2nd through August 25, 2023. A Celebration of Life and Open House will take place at The Gallery on Sunday, July 16, from 2-5pm.

Beverley Edwards, 1934-2021, was an admired artist and devoted teacher on Cape Cod and the South Shore area for over 40 years. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Beverley received her early art training at the High Museum of Art, Emory University, and the University of Georgia. After moving to Cape Cod in 1959, Beverley began to teach at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston as well as the Falmouth Artists Guild. She served as Museum School Director at the Fuller Museum in Brockton from 1972-1984, was President of the Falmouth Artists Guild in 1973, and founded the Monotype Guild of New England in 1985.

Ms. Edwards had over 35 solo exhibitions throughout the New York City and New England area and was included in over 100 group shows across the country. Her many awards included “Best in Show,” at the 1991 Cahoon Museum of American Art’s Trustee’s Juried Art Show, for her monotype “Black Lily.” Her work is in numerous museums, corporate, and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Duxbury Art Complex Museum, the Christian Science Church of Boston, and Tufts University in Boston.

Originally interested in architecture, Ms. Edwards’ early artworks included neon and fluorescent light sculptures, helium-inflated sky sculptures, large abstract paintings, and minimalist prints. Her affinity for architectural shape and bright color continued in her abstract expressionist painting and printmaking that followed. Ms. Edwards went on to explore numerous themes in a broad range of media throughout her career. She created a black and white series of botanical monotypes, inspired by Banks’ Florilegium, engravings of plant illustrations, from James Cook’s late 1700s voyage around the world. Perhaps some of Ms. Edwards’s most popular series included a colorful collection featuring tropical fish, painted in acrylic, and a more representational portrait series of country singers drawn in charcoal. Influenced by Japanese philosophy and her love of nature, Ms. Edwards’ later works sought to depict dreamlike and timeless images of sea and landscape in a style she called ‘poetic realism.’

For over 45 years, Ms. Edwards taught a variety of courses and workshops in drawing, painting, printmaking, and papermaking, inspiring hundreds of students and budding artists. This retrospective exhibition offers a small glimpse into her diversity and imagination, ranging from her very early paintings (1960s) to serigraphs (1970s), to pastel botanicals and landscapes (1980s-1990s).
