Stories of Place, Presence, and the Female Gaze
Artworks by Ocean Eversley

Artworks by Ocean Eversley will be displayed at The Gallery at FCTV from September 14 through October 30, 2026.
Ocean Eversley is a Falmouth-based painter, poet, photographer, and retired clinical social worker. Deeply committed to her community, she serves as an appointed member of the Falmouth Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Advisory Committee and as the DEI outreach coordinator for the Falmouth Cultural Council. For decades, she owned and operated prominent businesses on Martha’s Vineyard, including the Summer Breeze Gift Store on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, the Rising Sun Horse Ranch, Diana’s at the Winifred Restaurant, and Personal Best-One on One Training. In 2024, she turned her full-time focus to her lifelong passion for the arts. She established the online storefront Ocean Eversley Art Gallery, where she showcases original photography, fine art paintings, and print-on-demand functional art.
Ocean’s work invites viewers into a dreamlike world where portraiture and landscape intertwine, creating a sanctuary to explore human complexity. Deeply rooted in her ten years living in Falmouth and a defining thirty-two years residing on Martha’s Vineyard—an island she has returned to every season since 1965—her paintings reflect a constant dialogue between the ocean, shifting light, and identity. As an African-American and Native American artist, her work is directly shaped by the rich diversity and creative brilliance of BIPOC communities. She paints from a dual emotional and literal perspective, capturing not only the physical beauty of the shoreline but the profound feelings of freedom, renewal, and belonging that the water inspires.
Centering the female gaze, her portraits celebrate the beauty, individuality, and resilient joy of women. She is drawn to painting characters who exude an intricate balance of strength and softness, vulnerability and passion, introspection, wisdom, and self-love. Having spent decades operating multiple businesses on Martha’s Vineyard and also working as a clinical social worker, her art is fueled by a lifelong dedication to understanding human depth. These characters are designed to tell us something; they hold agency and invite the audience to explore both the subjects’ inner lives and their own complexities along the way.
To bring these interconnected narratives to life on canvas, she employs a tactile, mixed-media approach utilizing palette knives, pencils, and paintbrushes. I purposefully layer acrylic and oil paints, contrasting the vibrant, immediate energy of acrylics with the luminous depth of oils. This technique creates various textures and fluid gestures that mimic the physical movement of tides and atmosphere. The intentional application of color bridges the gap between the external physical environment and an internal emotional mood, allowing the paint itself to speak.
Her multi-disciplinary practice also deeply embraces lens-based media. Many of her photographs are taken on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod, continuing her deep connection to these coastal sanctuaries. In her photography, she attempts to highlight the beauty in the ordinary, the extraordinary, and the whimsical moments in life. Whether working with digital frames or raw environments, she captures fragments of time that celebrate life’s spontaneous magic. She hopes her photography touches you in ways that provide comfort, joy, insight, and inspiration.
Ultimately, her creative practice brings together visual art, photography, and poetic insight. Her works are invitations to pause, feel, and see beauty differently—encouraging us to look beyond the shore to the vast possibilities that emerge when we truly connect.
